Talya Baharal

Born and raised in Tel-Aviv, Israel, I dropped out of high school at age 16 and moved to London, England. Got a job at SSC&B Lintas, a London ad agency, working in their TV commercials production department. It was quite an education, exposing me to all the aspects of production, casting, editing and working with many of the young directors who were up and coming in London in the early seventies. In 1976, I returned to Israel where I worked for the CBS News bureau in Tel-Aviv during the historic and inspiring peace process with President Sadat of Egypt. In late 1979 I moved to New York City where I was an assignment editor on the CBS News Foreign Desk as well as a free lance researcher on the Universe show with Walter Cronkite.

Always intrigued by the art of jewelry, in 1984 I began developing my wearable objects body of work. Over almost 3 decades my art work was widely exhibited, published and sold nationally and abroad, garnering awards and grants. In 2007 I was a NYFA (New York Foundation for the Arts) fellow and 2011 a juror for NYFA sculpture/craft category. A contemporary book, "500 Silver Jewelry Designs", of which I was the curator, was published in 2011 by Lark Books/Sterling Publishing.

Throughout these three decades my artist husband and partner, Gene Gnida, and I, established Baharal-Gnida Designs. We exhibited and sold our studio jewelry collection throughout the US while living and maintaining our studios in the Hudson Valley.

In 2012 we moved to midcoast Maine where I began to focus exclusively on painting. We lived in Port Clyde by the ocean and I painted in my studio in Rockland, Maine. In the fall of 2015 we returned home to the Hudson Valley's Kingston, NY, where I currently live and paint.
